Rise to Fame
Gambino emigrated to the United States in a shipping boat. Once he made it to New York, he made a group of mafiosos with other italians that came with him and he started robbing, stealing, ilegal gambling, and later started bootlegging during 1920's prohibition.
He started ganing notoriety and was considered by people one of the most powerful gangsters of the time. During the next ten years, Gambino and his family became involved in many crimes including the killing of Joe Masseria's top rival, thus gaining the title of "Boss of Bosses". Masseria, one of Gambino's clan members went in conflict with Salvatore Maranzano(boss of Castellammarese clan) and by 1931, a series of killings in New York involving Castellammarese clan members and associates caused Maranzano and his family to declare war against Joe Masseria and his allies. These allies were Luciano and his associates, Costello, Vito Genovese, Joe Adonis, and Gambino.
Gambino, his clan and his allies fought in a war with the Castellammarese clan almost 4 years in total. Seeing that the war was destroying their underworld crime groups and Jewish+Irish groups becoming more and more powerful, they decided to end the war and on 15 April, 1931, Masseria was killed in a shootout at Nuova Villa Tammaro restaurant in Coney Island.
Gambino became caporegime in the Mangano family, lead by Vincent Mangano having Albert Anastasia as his underboss.
